The
Berlin Wall – Germany was once a country
divided. Now, it is a country united. The memory of
the divided city is becoming ever dimmer, but the
fragments of the wall that remain give testament to
a turbulent time in German and world history. The
GDR leadership erected the Berlin Wall on
13th August 1961. The wall tore apart families and
friendships, lovers and work colleagues. It created
a swath of bitterness and prejudice across the country.
Luckily, the division is no more. No longer are the
German people segregated from those they love.
On the momentous day of 9th November 1989, Berliners
from East and West fell into each other’s arms,
weeping in relief and joy. Thousands celebrated at
the border crossings. This is a night that no Berliner,
or German, will ever be able to forget. Almost one
year later, German unity became reality in international
law.
For those who want to experience a harrowing yet
intriguing part of German history, a visit to the
Berlin Wall memorial in Bernauer
Strasse is recommended. Opened in 1998, the memorial
preserves the memory of the inhuman border regime.
The atmosphere is utterly compelling, and for the
history interested traveller, it is a must see attraction
of this strong and surviving city.
